The themes of his life seem to be poverty, alcoholism and human degradation, and he worked for the postal service for 14 years. The 1987 movie "Barfly" (starring Mickey Rourke), which Bukowski wrote, was based on his early life. The film is written and directed by the multitalented Takeshi Kitano, who happens to be the same person as Beat Takeshi.īUKOWSKI: BORN INTO THIS The author, poet and cult figure Charles Bukowski (1920-94) was a little like the Edward Hopper of his genres. They're determined to have their revenge, and he's happy to do his part. Luckily Zatoichi happens upon a couple of geisha whose parents were murdered by the gang leader. Now Beat Takeshi takes over the role and starts by having his hero arrive in a remote village being run by a gang leader and his ronin bodyguard.
